Description
Welcome to our Dominica and Rainforest Retreat - cottages in the heart of the Roseau Valley.
We are secluded in an area called Shawford Estate but the locals call it "Doshan" which means "go find it".
We are five minutes from Trafalgar Falls, Titou Gorge and Watten Waven hot springs. Five minutes in the other direction and you are in the city of Roseau.
We are a newly built cottage community en route to Trafalgar, facing the village of Morne Prosper. Priding itself on its casual yet elegant buildings and planted grounds, the centerpiece of the estate is a 20'x40' spring-fed swimming pool.
Our cook, Emma, written up in the Orlando Sentinel, will prepare gourmet meals to your specifications, vegetarian or using free-range chickens and goat, fresh fish, as well as fruits and vegetables organically grown on the property. We have an abundance of root vegetables, yams, dasheen and potatoes. These are all very helpful for women in change of life.
We can arrange yoga classes for beginners through advanced levels.
We offer spa services at reasonable rates, manicures, pedicures, salt scrubs, massage.
The building project was designed with loving care and a view to making everyone comfortable. Although Oliver is Dominican by birth, he spent 38 years in the United States. When he brought Rachel to Dominica in 1995, she fell in love with the island and they began to repatriate in 1998. In 2002, Rachel became a Dominican citizen. Because they are an interracial couple, they tap both the culture of Dominica and the sophistication of the first world.
We can arrange for all island tours, on land and sea or a rental car, with or without a driver, for you to tour the island.
Docked, for your leisurely pleasure, is the newest addition to our family, a 34' Cabin Cruiser, "Loving Kindness" waiting to take you on a pleasure cruise. She accommodates ten for day trips and sleeps six for overnight island hopping.

Oliver this was one great party and I really appreciated the fact that I had the opportunity to enjoy it with you - although I was a bit late. I do hope you live to see many more years to come.

What an amazing place! We had such a great time celebrating your big birthday. Let's do it again soon! The island is spectacular and the wooden cottage was perfect. Thanks again to our generous hosts. Regards to Rusty :-)

Not yet but will!!!!
After recently taken some vacation time with the owners of this retreat, and having visited Dominica previously, I wouldn't hesitate to focus a vacation in or at the "Rainforest Retreat". Hope to see you there as well sometime in the future.

Thanks to Rachel and Oliver for allowing us to have our yoga retreat at your beautiful retreat center. Between the 2+ hours of yoga each day, the refreshing swimming pool, home cooked island meals, and the excursions to waterfalls, coral reefs, hot springs, etc. it was the most relaxing vacation I can remember!! And special thanks for the delicious chocolate coconut birthday cake. I hope I can celebrate future birthdays with you, too!

Wow! This was not a vacation. It was a treat! Dominica was spectacular and Rainforest Retreat was the perfect place to set oneself down to explore this lovely island paradise. Rachel and Oliver were the perfect hosts - not overbearing but they made us feel comfortable and very much at home. Our cabin was comfy and very airy - the birds sang us to sleep each night and the cool, island nightime breezes kept us comfortable all night long. We'll definitely be back.

Activities and Attractions |
Dominica is an island of 290 square miles, 29 miles long and 16 miles wide. We are located in the Lesser Antilles of the Windward Islands.
It is a mountainous island with tropical climate and plenty of rainfall, sometimes 340 inches/year in the mountains. The average temperature is 80 degrees.
American Airlines flies direct from most east-coast cities with a stop in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The Currency is Eastern Caribbean Dollars. The rate is controlled at EC$2.60 = US$1.00. Rule of thumb is that however we view a twenty dollar bill, that is how they view their twenty dollar bill. (Even though to us from the USA it is only eight dollars.)
Dominica is a very poor island. According to statistics it has a 27% unemployment rate. This seems high because it doesn't include people who do pickup jobs or all the little cottage industries. Most every home you pass in the small villages, sells something: coal, coffee, ice-pops. Everyone knows who makes the best ice-cream and where she sets out her cooler on Sundays so you can get a cone.
The Language of the island is English. It was an English Colony until 1978 when it was granted independence. Over the centuries it fell into French hands many times and the French language is prevalent. The Creole/patois is spoken by most islanders. Sad to say, many of the new generation are not learning patois. There is a dictionary of Patois/English.
Carnival is one of the main highlights of the tourist season. Preparation takes months but the partying goes on for about two weeks prior to Jouvert Monday and Carnival on Tuesday (Mardi Gras = Fat Tuesday). It is a very peaceful and safe celebration, colourful and fun. It is not Hollywood like Trinidad's famous carnival but it is more accessible to everyone.
Dominica has dubbed itself "The Nature Island" because it has such an array of natural geographical and geological sites, as well as the lush rainforest spawns every kind of tropical vegetation imaginable. FYI: there are no poisonous snakes or ferocious animals on the island.
The beaches are made up of sand and volcanic ash from the mountains, so that they are mostly grey. The ocean is crystal clear and calm on the Caribbean side, rougher on the Atlantic side. The fishing and whale watching are spectacular.
As we've said before- Doshan. Come find us! |
