Activities and Attractions |
Home to the oldest protected rainforest in the western hemisphere, Tobago is a truly lush island. It is frequently described as 'the last of the unspoiled Caribbean'. Some of David Attenborough's Trials of Life series were filmed at the Little Tobago Seabird Sanctuary and underwater explorer Jacques Cousteau was enraptured by the coral reefs, which are easily seen through the crystal-clear waters. Many are just offshore from the beach, making snorkelling easy and one of the great pleasures of a Tobagonian sojourn. Rare turtles lay their eggs here from April to July - you can take an exciting nocturnal excursion to watch them.
Tobago is a popular holiday destination among Europeans, Americans and also the neighbouring Trinidadians who enjoy the tranquil atmosphere and friendly people. Things get lively on Sunday nights at a big street party known as 'Sunday School' where soca rhythms fill the air and the street comes alive with dancing, gambling and stalls selling fresh local food.
Boats: Many companies (listed in the guide books available at Palmhaven) offer trips to remote beaches, many that are only accessible by sea. Modes of transport available include speed boats, sailing boats, glass bottom boat rides (to see the reefs without getting wet). They also offer other activities for the more adventurous. You can also rent or charter hobie cats, trimarans, and catamarans by the day or longer.
Dolphins: The bottlenose and Atlantic are the two species most commonly seen.
The main town on Tobago is Scarborough. It has a port, free car parking, and a good market. In the middle of this hot bustling town is a cool, shady oasis, which is often overlooked - the Botanical Gardens. It covers 18 acres of former sugar estates, and has a variety of flowering trees and shrubs, including flamboyants, African tulips and an orchard house. |
