Description
Just a one-hour flight from Florida lies some of the most isolated and untouched bonefish flats in all of the Bahamas. The largest island in the Bahamas and one of the least populated, Andros Island has for many years been known as the bonefishing capital of the world. More specifically, the best waters are located on South Andros. Mars Bay Bonefish Lodge offers easy access to these pristine waters. The lodge is located at the end of the road on South Andros; you literally cannot drive any further south. What does that mean to you? Well …no less than a ten mile shorter run than the nearest lodge over rough open water and up to an extra hour fishing each day. You can expect to encounter limitless schools of two to five pound tailing bones, sight cast to smaller schools in the six to nine pound category, as well as take shots at cruising doubles and singles in excess of ten pounds.

The boats are equipped with poles and platforms but most of the bonefishing here is done by wading the hard-bottomed flats with knowledgeable local guides. You’ll fish the legendary waters of South Andros like Beach Cay, Grassy Creek, Hawks Nest, Jackfish, and the Water Cays to name a few, all just a 10 to 35 minute boat ride from the lodge.

Barracuda, jacks and the occasional permit and tarpon can be found in the deeper creeks and channels. Also offered is inshore shoal fishing where you can catch Snappers till your arms fall off. In addition, offshore fishing is offered for tuna, mahi mahi, wahoo, and other blue water species near the world’s third-largest barrier reef that lies just one mile from the lodge. (Please note that there are no non-fishing activities offered.)

The lodge can currently accommodate up to eight anglers. You’ll be on the water early each morning and back safely in time for dinner each afternoon. At the end of the day if you still want to fish or practice your cast, you’re welcome to step on to the flats in front of the lodge and fish until dark. The main building features three bedrooms, two full bathrooms; a living room with satellite TV; a dining room and kitchen, where a creative Bahamian chef prepares delicious meals. There is also a guest house that has two bedrooms, each with a private bath, and a living room with satellite TV. All rooms are air conditioned.

You’ll not find a mint on your pillow and we won’t crack your pepper for you. So why Mars Bay Bonefish Lodge? There are several reasons but only one that counts. Forget that the food is great, that the accommodations are clean and comfortable, or that the guides are excellent. The reason is the fishing. Nowhere in the Bahamas will you encounter so many large bonefish that have yet to see a fly.

The lodge is under new American ownership and management and has several experienced guides in its stable. You’ll be on the water early and back safely in time for dinner. At the end of the day if you still want to fish or practice your cast you’re welcome to step out onto the flats in front of the villa and fish till dark. We catch bones there on a regular basis. And finally, you will find the accommodations clean and modern; the food is great, the equipment reliable, the guides excellent, and the beer ice cold.
