Description
Welcome to Sea Cliff Cottages, located on the lush nature island of Dominica. Experience the beauty of a tropical Caribbean night as you sit on your private balcony watching the moonlight on the palms and the shimmer of the sea below you.
The cottages will provide you with all your needs for short or long term stays and you can relax in comfort surrounded by flowers with the sounds of the sea in the background. Located on the dramatic northeast coast, Sea Cliff is only a 15 minute drive from Dominica's main airport, Melville Hall. An afternoons drive can take you through the Carib Territory and on up into the natural beauty of Dominica's rainforest. Closer to home there are numerous hiking paths to explore or you can refresh yourself in the natural bathing pools found in nearby rivers. A secluded waterfall just a short distance away provides a delightful setting for a picnic and swim.
Just below the cottages is Hodges Bay. Protected by a series of small islands, it is one of the better beaches in the area. In addition, the Hodges River empties into the sea at this point and is a favourite spot for children to play, and for rinsing off the salt after an ocean swim. Woodford Hill beach, Turtle beach and the beautiful Pointe Baptiste beach are also within walking distance.
For those who wish to dive, there is a five star PADI dive centre located twelve miles away, in the village of Portsmouth, which offers certification courses as well as day and night diving.
The cottages are a twenty minute walk from the picturesque fishing village of Calibishie. Here you can while away the time chatting with the local people about the customs and culture of Dominica or treat yourself to a meal in one of the restaurants. If the timing is right you can take home some fresh lobster, snapper, or mahi mahi when the fishermen return to the "bayside" in the late afternoon.
At Sea Cliff we wish to provide you with the opportunity to become involved with our culture and our community in order to experience Dominica to the fullest .
Our smallest cottage (about 500 square feet) is set up for one or two people. Cosy and intimate, it has a complete kitchen, dining alcove and three piece bathroom with hot shower. The bed sitting room has a double bed and plenty of closet and drawer space. A large balcony looks out over the sea below. Tile floors and natural hardwood furnishings are featured throughout. As with the other units a variety of fruit trees are planted around the cottage for you to sample when in season.
TWO BEDROOM COTTAGE...sleeps 4 to six
Slightly removed from the others, the two bedroom cottage features almost an acre of flowers, fruit trees, and vegetable gardens. Surrounded by lots of open space, it is a favourite for family groups with active children. The main bedroom has a queen size bed and the other room has two twin beds. Both bedrooms have ceiling fans for your sleeping comfort. There is a fold down double futon couch in the living room which can be used for extra sleeping space if needed. The balcony faces the sea and runs full length
across the front of the house. Cable TV and a CD/cassette player are provided for your further enjoyment.
ONE BEDROOM COTTAGE !!...sleeps 2 to 4
This cottage is a pretty little one bedroom dwelling. As in the other houses there are cathedral ceilings and tile throughout. The bed is queensized and the bathroom is a 3 piece bathroom. A complete kitchen setup, dining area and sitting room provide you with ample space to relax in. There is cable TV, stereo cassette and telephone featured as well.
The back of the cottage looks out over the pineapple garden and fruit trees and is shaded by a huge old mango tree. The balcony in the front looks out to the sea and islands below.
The fold down futon couch in the living area can be used as a double bed if extra sleeping space is demanded.
ONE BEDROOM HOME sleeps 2 to 4, 6 with annex ** ( One week minimum stay in winter season)
This is a creatively designed one bedroom cottage. It is particularly suited for couples looking for more space and seclusion. In addition to the queensize bed, a fold down futon couch provides extra sleeping space. CD/cassette stereo, cable TV, VCR and washing machine are also included for your use. Dual voltage wiring is an extra convenience as well as a passive solar water system and ceiling fan in the bedroom. Large
glass doors open onto the balcony with a spectacular view of the sea and island below as well as the mountains and river valley inland. Totally private, you can relax completely .
A small annex has been added below with a bedsitting room (double bed), kichenette and bath. If you wish to rent this in conjunction with the main house it will cost
another $25 per night. The annex will not be rented separately from the main house.
HIKING TRAILS AND SITES OF INTEREST
Although we do not offer set "tours" we have several guides who will be happy to take you to various spots if you wish. Otherwise ,there is lots that you can do on your own. There are numerous small roads that lead up into the hills behind Calibishie. These are "feeder roads" for the banana farmers and lead up onto the ridges looking down on the valleys below. Partly bush and part banana plantation, there are some incredible views as you look across the valleys and out to the sea. During nesting season, you can see flocks of parrots in the trees.
Various rivers flow down from the mountains with waterfalls and
bathing pools if you know where to look. Just past the village of Bense (a couple of miles from Calibishie ) is a lovely little waterfall, the Chaudiere Falls, where you can dive from the top into the pool below. Off the beaten track in the forest it is a wonderful spot to spend the day.
Syndicate Trail (past the town of Portsmouth) will lead you up into the rainforest and a natural habitat for the parrots as well. The Syndicate Falls are one of the least known and beautiful Falls on the island.
The "Red Rocks" are another place of wild , unexpected beauty. Just a few minutes walk from the cottage you can walk down on this promotory and surround yourself with the crashing of the sea and views of the village below and the french islands on the horixon.
The Carib Territory is about a half hour drive along the coast. The villages are small with wonderful gardens. If you are interested in horticulture watch for the place that grows a variety of local orchids and other exotic plants to sell. It is on the left hand side of the road but if you miss it--just ask someone. The Caribs are well known for their unique basket
designs and skill in boat building. Tiny shops selling their wares are dotted along the road.
If you continue down the road you will enter the Central Forest Reserve which has been set aside by the government as a protected rainforest. The roads are narrow and winding as they climb into the mountains then back down again to the southern coast. The capitol city of Roseau is about an hour and one half away.
One of, if not the ,most beautiful drives on the island is down the road along the coast past VieleCasse and Pennville to Portsmouth. A winding coastal road climbing high into the hills takes you by one of the most fertile growing areas in the country. Small farms hang precariously to the mountainsides with the sea crashing on the rocks below. Partway through the trip stop and explore the sulphur springs, talk to the farmers and maybe buy some of the freshest produce on island.
There are many other spots to discover and explore. The Northeast is truly dramatic and exhilarating !
