Activities and Attractions |
Carriacou, widely acclaimed to mean ?land of many reefs?, is the sister isle of Grenada and the largest and most southern of the Grenadine islands. Carriacou is 13 sq miles and has a population of about 7000.
The island is renowned for its cultural expressions and has sustained activities like traditional boat-building- possibly the only place in the world where it is still a practice, string band music, big drum dances, quadrille dance, traditional weddings, maroons, Shakespeare Mass, tomb stone feast and past play.
Many of the traditions and findings are preserved in the Museum in Hillsborough. The Museum is owned by the Carriacou Historical Society. UNESCO described the Museum as the prettiest little Museum in the Caribbean.
Places of interest and attractions include the Oyster Beds in Tyrrel Bay, White Island, Sandy Island, Belair, Dumfries, Ningo Well, Heritage Village, Archeological Sites in Grand Bay and Sabazan. Most popular beaches are Anse La Roche and Paradise. The
snorkeling and diving sites found around the island are reputedly world class.
You can fly to Carriacou from Grenada via SVG Air or there is a daily ferry ?The Osprey Lines? between the sister Isles.
